LOWER HUTT BOROUGH
MEETING OP .THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting oE the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. E. I'. Eisliwoi'th) presiding, and tliero were present: Councillors J. M'Dougall, W. Meldrum, J. Brassel, S. Clendon, W. Cotton, \\. Kerr, A. J. West, and A. J. Hobbs. Tho report presented by the Engineer stated that during the fortnight the work done was confined mainly to repairs or streets. The contractors had commenced work on the Harnett subdivision, and a grade had been given for the laying down of the sower. In order to meet the estimated expenditure for the year the council had decided to raise tlie general rate of the borough from' 2 t-od. to 3d. in tho <£. Tho valuation of the rateable property of the borough is i;7sß,t'Jo, and the rate is estimated to produce i'9lßl 2s. Gd.
A letter was received from Messrs. Young, Neave, and' Courtney advising that an agreement had been made between iir. 1). Connolly and the Anglican Boys' Homo Society that the amount deposited by Connolly is to remain in the hands of the borough until the sewer drains have been provided, and is not to be uplifted by Connolly without the consent of the society.
Messrs U \Y. Tanner and AV: An draws wrote requesting that an open drain' between tlieir properties be p.pod and covered. The . 'request was rclused.
The Westland Timber Co. wrote agreeing to the setting back o) their fence on Victoria Street frontage and accepting the couucii's terms for same.
It was decided to grant the request of the Petone Borough Council to join in bringing under the notice of the Wellington City Council the necessity for lights oji the ilutt Pipe Bridge.
Councillors Hobbs and J. Al'Dougall were appointed to attend the conference of delegate to be held to-day to discuss tilt hospital and charitable aid rate.
11l accordance with notice of motion Councillor 'Dougull moved: "That the resolution passed at a council meeting on May 13, imposing conditions to the issue of u license for' Kins George's Theatre, be rescinded." On being put the motion was defeated.
Councillor \V. Cotton moved: "That this council considers a universal wheel lux throughout the Dominion for tlio maintenance of main ami arterial roads is desirable.' He said that thero were about Ki.OOO motor-cars and motor vehicles which, at <£5 each, would bring in -USD,(IOO per annum, and other vehicles would bring in another ,£1)0,000 at a fee of .£1 each. Ho said that J*) had bpen spent; on the upkeep of- the Hutt ltoad in live years. He thought that the Government should be forced to tako lip the matter and impose a wheel' tax. The motion was carriea and on "the motion ol Councillor Cotton it was decided to send, a remit on the subject for consideration iit the next j\)unieipnl Conference, and that the various local bodies bo asked to support the matter.
