THE SHIPPING SHORTAGE
OUTLOOK NOT BRIGHT. In response to inquiries made regarding the acquiring of shipping space to meet the needs of the Dominion, tho • Prime Miliister has cabled from london to Mr. itoben Burns, president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, stating that he will do everything to secure relief in this direction. Mr. Massey mentions that nearly the whole of tho Australian .and New Zealand ships are required for urgent war purposes. The- general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company , (Mr. A. W. Bennett) stated in Christchurch that the shipping outlook -was. not promising from NeiY Zealand's point of view. Less than half of last season's wool clip had been got away,'though usually June saw the stores practically cleared. Tho new clip would begin to come forward in the North Island in November. Storage was difficult,, owing to the very high cost of new buildings. Mr. Bennett mentioned that last spring New Zealand was .ible to get a considerable quantity of insulated tonnage from Australia, but there was little chnnce of this happening again. Some of the Australian stores were full of meat, and the Australian season was earlier than the New Zealand season.
