_ « INSTRUCTIONS TO BOARDS LAST MAN TO REMAIN ON FARM Recently tlis Military Service Boards asked tho Government for it ruling on the matter of policy involved in the consideration of appeals from farm labourers i\nd other essentia! workers. The boards felt that they had reached a point where tile Government should indicate how the conflicting claims of the Army and essential industries ouriit tn be treated. Tho matter was.submitted to Cabinet, and the following instruction has been sent to the Military Service Boards:— "Cabinet has considered the question uf sine_ die exemptions already granted, particularly to farmer reservists. Cabinet is of opinion that production should be maintained as nearly as possible at the present standard; that the last man should be retained on the faun provided that your board considers his retention essential to maintaining production, and provided further that neither by subdivision of farms nor by any other means shall there bo evasion of military service.
"The Government is of opinion that the country should produce if, possible sufficient wheat for the year's needs. If spt-isfinil that the teamster on wheat land will bo used for the purpose of wheat production, the board should grant sine dio exemption on wndition that tho ;fer>nister continues in the work of wheat production. "In response to a direct inquiry, Hie Imperial Government advises the New Kealand Government that the gold production of the Empire, if possible, should not bo alWed to fall beiow the present level, and also that the production of scheelite is considered by the Imperial Ministry of Munitions to be most essential. Cabinet therefore does not propose to recommend any alteration in tho present policy with rasped to men enggaged in these industrie.'." FOR ACTIVE SERVICE OFFICERS APPOINTED.
