Tanners and boot manufacturers in iVictoria aro still hopeful that business will result from inquiries which were set afoot early in May as to tho ability of Australian makers to supply about 3,000,000 pairs of boots of military' 6tyle, 011 account of the Imperial Government. It is understood that since the deal was first mentioned the preliminaries 'have been furthered to a point at which the Sikoliliood of a contract, being placed in Australia appe&rs much less remote than at the outset of the negotiations. One considerable advantage which Would accrue from the'securing of the contract would be that country tanners would be able to participate, as the footwear required is boliovcd to comprise 1,500,000 pairs made of chrome tanned leather, and the othor half of russet kip, the latter being tho lino u.pon which the tanners in the outer areas concentrate almost exclusively. For some time past that section of the tanning trado in Victoria has been engaged in a struggle for existence, and it i 9 stated that at present there are for sale no fewer than six country tanneries, which formerly were more or less thriving concerns. Their main difficulty lias been to obtain sufficient raw material, this arising from the ''intrusion" of agents of metropolitan tannoiies. v.ho have outbid tie looil firms for hides. Town tanners, on the other hand, are said to be suffering from the effects'of the embargo upon export, one of which is that thousands of pounds' worth of leather is "hung up" until such lime as permission to ship it is forthcoming. In every aspect a. contract of the magnitude indicated would be extremely beneficial for the leather industry in the Commonwealth. .
