MILITARY PRISONERS
EEPOETS ABOUT WANGANUI BAHRACKS. Some rather extravagant statements have been mndo about tho alleged illtreatment of the military prisoners held in the Wanganm Detention liarracke, which are in the premises formerly occupied by the police gaol in that town. Heferrinji to the matter yesterday, Sir James Allen said that he had heard' the reports that had been in circulation, and he had'made'some -preliminary inquiries already. "The reports eo fair as 1 havo them';"'he said,-"seem' to indicate that things arc satisfactory, but I .cm 'not satisfied that this is so, and I am takin B steps to have a full investigation made. Instructions were given to a Defence officer, who recently visited the ' Detention Barracks, to see that no illtreatment of prisoners ivas to take place, and I havo also issued instruction myself to the same effect."
