A NEW ZEALAND HERO

HIGH HONOUR WON IN ITALY.

News was received yesterday that Mr. Aubrey G. Smith, youngest eon of Mr. Christopher Smith, of Wellington, has been awarded the Vnloroa Militaris-im Italian decoration for valour which corresponds to tlio British' V.C.-and that he has also been made an M.B.E.— Member of the British Empire Order. Mr. Smith left New Zealand three years ago, and after being in France for three or four months went to Italy, where he has since remained. Ho carries none of the- ordinary military ranks, but has served throughout as n volunteer transport oicer, without pay, in the motor transport section of the Italian Ked Cross. The deed which gained Mr. Smith the Vnlorea Militaris was performed over a year ago, but he has given, do account of'it in his letters home. These letters show incidentally, however, that the section to which ho is attached has seen extended service in tho forward hghting zone. It was "up with tho guns at the time when British heavy artillery was supporting the Italian offensive on tho Carso Plateau. In one of his latest letters Mr. Smith speaks with enthusiasm of the supremacy of the Allied aviators on tho Italian front. "Our aviators" Ho TCinarks, "have them absolutely stono cold hove and elsewhere Our chaps arc mustard!" He adds that an enemy 'plane is seldom seen; they only drop bombs at night.
