NEW DEPARTMENT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. .During the past two years the Government of South Australia has had attached to its Civil Service nn expert in town-planning and bousing. The Attor-ney-General, the Hun. H. N. Bnrwell, announced recently that the Government had decided to maintain town-planning as a separate find permanent department of the State under his direction, and as a preliminary to this the services of Mr. Charles , C. Beade (who organised and carried through the Australasian town-planning tour in 19U and 1015 on behalf of tho Garden Cities and Town-Planning Association of Great Brilain) has been engaged for ft further term of two years as Government TownPlanner. Mr. Readc will be,an officer of the first class in the professional division of tho public service. The adoption of a definite and continuous town-planning policy by the Government in South Australia should not be without its influence on other States, especially in view of the Second Australian Official Town-Planning Conference and Exhibition which has been organised under the patronage of Uio State Governments of Australia and "will bo opened in Brisbane on July\3l) next.
