WELLINGTON'S HIGH PRICES

WHAT OFFICIAL FIGURES SHOW

The figures issued by the Ooverninent Statistician in the' ofhci.il "Abstract of Statistics" for May show that tho cost of living is still increasing in New Zealand. Percentages of increaso in the prices ruling in April, 1918, over tho prices current in July, 19U, are shown as follow ;— DunAuck. Wgln. Chch. edin, Groceries ... -12.46 j<5.60 24.67 37.17 Dairy produce 49.70 30.86 28.52 37.58 Meat 24.80 34.12 43.30 42.03 Average of groups 37.06 38.41 32.03 39.05 Index numbers for the March quarter, 1918, show aftain that the cost of living is higher in Wellington than in any other city of the Dominion. Meat is cheaper here than in Christchurch or Dnnedin, but rent is very much higher than in tho other centres. If the average annual expenditure' nf the period 1909-13 is represented by the number 1000, the index numbers for tho March quarter, 1918, are as follow:Food All ' groups. Dent, grours Auckland 1428 968 12-52 Wellington 1-16-5 1332 ' 1414 Christchnrch ... 1376 872 1163 Dnnedin 1424 870 1215 One of the tables prepared by the Government Statistician shows the comparative costs of an assumed weekly household consumption of certain food-, stuffs since the outbreak of war. The table covers ordinary household supplies in the quantities that might ba used weekly by a, family of four or five persons. ' The articles that could have been bought for 19s. 8!d. in July. 1914. would have cost 265. lOjd. in April, 1918. This represents an increaso of 3fi.47 per cent. It is a fact worthy of notice that tho percentage of increaso un to October, 191.7, was 33.30, so that there, has been comparatively little advance, during the last eighteen months.
