The inquiry into the blowing, up of the Italian battleship Benedetto Brin led to the trial by court-martial of four of the survivors, three of whom boasted that they participated in the explosion from anarchist motives. A fourth, named Carpi, confessed that he had been solely tempted by' Austrian money. Others went to Switzerland and received infernal clock machines that had been made in' Germany, and the bombs subsequently -were attached to the ship, causing the disaster. / The evidence showed that all four men belonged to a secret society subsidised by Austro-German fiuutv for undermining Italy's national defence.
