SHORT LIST OF POLICE CASES. ■ Messrs. J. Ellisou and I. Salek, Justices of tho Peace, presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt wibh ■the police cases. _ . A. B. Sanderson, alias Marshall, alias l"red Logan, was charged that at Waflganui on May 25 ho did ohtain goods and cash (.£2B) from M'Gruer and Co. by means of a valueless cheque. On tho application of Chief Detective Boddam ho was remanded to appear at Wanganui' on .Tune 12. ,
John Casoy, a fireman, was charged Iwifch assaulting Mark Ledbury and John Eooley on the evening of Juno 3. The assault on Ledbury was described by several witnesses as a brutal one. QJho three men had been in a publichouse drinking, and on coming ont into tho street, there was some conversation between the three, and Casey, it was alleged, appeared anxious to pick a quaripl, but the other two men seemed just as anxious to avoid one. Presently Casey pulled off his coat, and struck Ledbury a violent blow on the jaw and knocked him down. Ho then struck iDooley, who managed to get away.' Casey returned,' and struck the unfortunate Xedbury again and again, -ona witness stating that he saw Casey kick Ledbury on the left skonlder as he was lying on the ground. -The defendant doniod striking Ledhnry moro tflian one blow, and stated that the cvidenco given against him was all falso. He contended that he wasknQcked down by the two men earlier in the ovoning, and this.was his method of reprisal'. For assaulting Dooley ho was lined 10s., in default seven days' imprisonment, and for assaulting Ledbury he was fined £5 and ordered to pay . costs, Wio' alternative beinpf one month's imprisonment. John William Lucre was charged with being found drunk, also with stealing a canary cage, valued at 10s. 6d., from Foglia and Copp. Tho defendant pleaded guilty, and said that the theft was committed while he was under tho influence of liquor. Ho pleaded for a chance, and stated that he was willing to havo a prohibition order issued against him. Although'his record was not a satisfactory one, the Justices decided to five him a chance. He was convicted and discharged ior driinkenn&s, convicted and ordered to pay 12s. costs on the charge of theft, and a prohibition order was issued against inm. ... For insobriety three first offenders ■were convicted and discharged, and another who failed to appear-had his bail of 203. estreated.
