PAWNBROKERS' CLOSING HOURS
4 ( Unserved judgment was delivered yesterday afternoon by Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., in the caso in which Frederick Wilson, Inspector of Factories, proceeded against 13. Semeloff,- pawnbroker and second-hand dealer, under Section 25 of tho Shops and Offices Act, 1908, for failing to close his shop at G o'clock, that boing tho hour when such shops were required to be closed pursuant to a notico duly gazetted. The Magistrate held that defendant could not bo classed as a jeweller, though ho sold jewellery as a side-line. His principal business was that' of pawnbroking and second-hand dealing. There was no ,proof of any general requisition for closing all shops iu the city of Wellington, nor a requisition from pawnbrokers or second-hand dealers asking for the fixing of an hour for closing their shops. There being no proof of any' general' requisition for closing, and defendant not being a jeweller, he was not bound to close hia place of business at any particular hour. Tho information was dismissed.
