LICENSING BENCH
ANNUAL MEETING /"
SATISFACTORY POLICE REPORT
The annual meeting of tho Wellington Licensing Committee was held at noou yesterday. Mr. W. G. ltiddell, S.M., presided, and with him were Messrs. It. Fletcher, M.P., John Smith, G. Petlicriek,. and G. Tiller.
Tho chairman said that tho police report pointed to tho fact that the Wellington hotels had been conducted in a satisfactory manner. There had been, a considerable number of convictions, but these .were hot all for breaches of tho Licensing Act. The majority of convictions had been in respect of tho AVar Regulations, such as "shouting" and simijar offences. It appeared to the members'of the Beifch that the heavy penalties imposed under the, AVar Regulations would have a deterrent elFect. During the year legislation had also been introduced shortening the hours during which liquor might be sold. Tho effect of this legislation was that the number of convictions for drunkenness, had appreciably decreased. It was hoped that licensees in 'tho AYcllington district would continue during the coining year to conduct their houses in tho present satisfactory, manner.
