FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
A SECOND DIVISION COMPLAINT. Tho executive of tho Second Division League on Saturday brought forward an alleged case of hardship under tho financial assistance 6cheme. The reservist .concerned was a member of Class B 1 (wife and one child). His pro-enlist-ment incomo had been ,£163 a year. He applied for grants from the Financial Assistance Board to cover houso rent a year) and insurance .£5 4s. a year), and tho board decided to pay only the insurance. The wife's position during her husband's military scrvice was set forth by the leagno as follows i—' £ e. d. Husband's allotment (3s. 6d. per , day) 63 17 6 Wife's separation allowance (3s. per day) 54 15 0 Child's separation allowanco (Is. 6d. per day) 27 7 G 146 0 0 Ont of this she has to pay rent 53 0 0 \ Leaving her and her ohild as net income .£O4 0 0 A Dominion reporter was informed yesterday that although the Financial Assistance Board has not identified tho case precisely, the official view is that tho statement of the Sceoud Division League discloses no grievance at all. The husband's income as a civilian was JEI69 a year, and out of that he paid £52 for rent and £5 Is. for insurance, leaving a net incomo of .£lll lGs. to maintain husband, ' wife, and child. Tho wife has now a net income of £94 to maintain herself and child. Ihe lwsband is drawing Is. 6d. a day, or ,£27 6s. a year, so that the total cnsli incomo of tho family is now ,£173 6s. a year, as against ,£169 a year formerly, and in addition the husband is fed and clothed by the State.
