BRUTAL TREATMENT OF WAR PRISONERS
STORIES OF SHAMEFUL BARBARISM PUBLISHED.
London, June 2. The official report of the treatment of prisoners of war, published to-day, confirms the unofficial stones of shameful barbarism. One man who was captured in March was compelled to wort immediately, serving a German held gun with ammunition, and digging the position for it, under British fire. A working party, including warrant officers, noncoms., and medical men, was made to work on roads and light railways under shell fire. They were knocked about with rillo butts and sticks. One man was thrashed until he lay on the ground groaning. One working party had a corporal killed and three men wounded bv shell fire. Many behind the lines died from weakness. When fresh batches of men were captured they were kept working behind the lines instead of being sent to registered camps.-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn .-Renter.
