WATERSIDE ACCIDENTS
COMMISSION TAKES EVIDENCE AT LYTTELTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Ch'ristchurch, May 28. The Commission of Inquiry into Accidents on the Waterfront sat at Lyttelton to-day. Evidence was given by ,waterside workers of long experience as to the state of gear in ships trading to the port. Generally, it was stated that the winches in some ships were in bad order, the brakes acting improperly, ivliilo tho lighting system was in many (jnses )xid. An improvement on the hook used on coal baskets was necessary. In several cases hatches were too short, and had/to bo kept up with wedges on bits of wood. The fore and aft hatch bars should be 'be iron-shod to obviate the risk of accidents through wear and tear, Spliced running gear, it was claimed, should not bo used, and all ladders in hatches should bo direct from the top to the bottom. Defects in' certain ships were specified which' it was contended should be remedied. In every ease where complaint had been made repairs nnd improvements had been effected.
