PENNIES FROM AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON RED CRO¥cIALLENGE ] _ An interesting- contest in mor.ev-raising tor a patriotic purpose is to take placo between tho Wellington branch of tho British Red Cross and the Aucklaud branch of tho society. A challenge has been issued on behalf of tho Wellington branch to the Auckland branch to lay a "copper trail" on one lino of the railway between Wellington and Auckland, a distance of 426 miles, before the Auckland branch .can lay a liko trail on the other metal from Auckland to Wellington. Under tho conditions as prescribed the bum of money which the winners will have to collect first will bo £93,657 10s. . -. i _ The announcement of tho challenge and its acceptance was made in the Town Kail last night by tho Hon. T. M. Wilford. The terms of the two documents are as follow:— CHALLENGE To the Chairman of the Auckland Branch of the British Red Cross Society. We, Villa Pearce an.,l Georgia Wilford, both of Wellington, being members of the Wellington branch of tho British Red Cross Society, do by this writing challenge you and your executive to a. contest for the purpose of raising funds for the Red Cross in this year 1918. The conditions of the challenge ara as follow.— 1. That a lino be drawn along tho northern boundaries of Clifton, Wliangamomonn, and Kaitieki, then along tbo southern boundary of East Taupo, ixnd thence along tho northern lioimdary of AVairoa to Paritu ou tho East Coast. The towns of Taumarumu and Upper Mohaka. being deemed to bo north of tho Hue as drawn. This line represents, according to the Government Statist, a. fair division of the North Island on a basis of papulation. 2. That all territory north of this dividing line be called the Auckland lighting area, and all the territory south of siick line buiug called the Wellington fighting area.

That, the contest will close on fOctober 18, 1018, and that two-thirds of the net amount collected in each fighting area shall bo allotted, to the British J-ied Cross "Our Day" appeal and the remaining one-third to Urn Auckland and Wellington branches of the Red Cross respectively. Wellington Centre of Iho British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John versus Joint Committee of tho British .Ked Cross Society and Order of St. John, in Auckland. In the matter of the challenge, of tho 13th instant, submitted by Sirs. Vidu I'carce and-ilrs. Georgia Wilford, both of Wellington, the same has been considered by the joint committee controlling Red Cross interests in -Auckland. Tho challenge is accepted subject to amended conditions as follows:—
Conditions: 1. That the challenge is submitted with the consent of, and for and on behalf of tho Wellington Centre of the British Red Crass Society and Order of St. John. 2. That a line bo, drawn along tlio northern boundaries of Clifton, Wliai);;amomona, and Kaitioki, then along tlio southern boundary of East Tanpo, and thence along; tho northern boundary of Wairoa to Paritu on the East Coast; tlio (owns of Tauinnrunui and Upper Mohaka being deemed to bo north of the lino to be drawn. ,1 That all territory north of this 'dividing lino lie called the Auckland fighting area, mid all the territory south of such lino bo culled Hie Wellington lighting area. b. G. That tho challenge be known as tho "Wellington Copper-Trail Challenge to Auckland." j 7. That on Saturday of each week tue contesting parties shall publicly announce what milcago of the line has been covered, and the place reached in such week.
8. That tho contest commence on June 1, MIS; and that it close on October 18, 1918, or at such timo (is cither of tho contestants reaches the opposite goal, as per Clnuso 4 hereof.
9. That the funds shall be devoted exclusively to Rod Cros purposes, and Ihat the allotment of Uie amount received shall be at tho discretion of the respective centres. It is. however, to lie distinctly understood that for the. purpose of this contest all moneys received throughout the period of the contest shall Jio creifited to the fund, and that pro-
