Trout-fishing- in the South Wairarapa district is going 'steadily from, bad to worse. The Mangatarere, for ■ instance, formerly oiio of the-best fly streams m. the AVairorapa, is now practical y emplj of fish', in spite of Hlwra and careful stocking. Eels 3 arc plentiful, and late spring floods'followed by dry summer* i;uve (ho fry a poor chance. Although last summer was not so dry as usual, the fry appear to have mado little headway. Sweets of outstanding quality were on" sale at tho Town Hall last.evening on the occasion of the Hon. '1. M. Wilfords lecture in aid of the Press Baby lund. The excellence of the sweets, winch were all made by Mrs. T. Martin, who was in ■charge of the sweets .stall, was the subject of general remark, and then- manufacturer had the satisfaction of seeing her handiwork bring in a very satisfac tory sum for the good.cause.
