THE NAVAL RAID ON POLA
STORY OF THE ITALIAN EXPLOIT. Rome, May 22. Official.—A participator in the raid on Pola relates that the operation was carried out in tho early hours of the morning. Tho weather was windy. A torpedo boat, containing LieutenantCommander Pellegrini and a gallant crew, fired two torpedoes fifty-eight minutes after leaving the supporting convoy, which wa3 composed of armed motor launches. When tho enemy realised tha presence of the torpedo boat a terrific burst of artillery fire ensued, during which Lieutenant-Commander Pellegrini signalled: "I have torpedoed a ship, and my ship is destroyed. All help is useless." A squadron of chasing seaplanes broko down an attempted aerial attack by tho enemy against the convoy. The account states that a hostile vessel was indubitably struck and either sunk or put out of action for a considerable time. All those on board tho attacking torpedo boat were taken prisonor—Aus.-j N.Z. Cable Assn.
