"FACE THE MUSIC AND PAY"
MIE YMAR'S TEAM SERVICE. The action of the Wellington City Council in increasing the tramway charges lo tho Miraniar Borough by one halfpenny per car mile, was warmly condemned by the Mayor of Miraniar (Mr. F. Townsend) nt v the meeting of the Miraniar Borough' Council Jast evening. Mr. Townsend said that under an agreement drawn up some years ago Miraniar paid at tho rate of Is. per mile for its cars. Then they commenced to uss their own power, but after a while had to knock that off. . Through Miraniar doing that the City Council had taken the stand that the Is. per mile agreement with them had been broken. Whether it |iad. or not he was not in a position to say. Anyhow, they went back to tho old charge of Is. per mile until last July, when the city put up the. charge halfpenny per mile. Now the city was putting it up another halfpenny. Tho wh'o'lc; ihing was that Miraniar 'had to pay, and (here was no way out of it. If they took measures to lest the validity of that agreement and the action of the City Council, the City Council would take it out of Miraniar in some other way. They had done that on more occasions than one already. Ho did not know that they could do anything more than face the music ami pay. They had no redress whatever. The rise would cost them over .£2OO .per year. Karori had been treated as Minimal- had. The city officer's letter conveying nolico of the increase was "received."
