"MOST HEROIC ACT OF 1917"
At the annual general court of the Koynl Jliiniinie Society in London recently it wa.s stated that in 857 cases brought to the society's cognisance i)2O lives were saved. The society's gold medal for the most heroic net in 1917 was awarded to Commander Francis L. Lewin. It was stated that on the evening of February 8, 1017. one of His uhips struck a mine and sank in a fow minutes. A heavy.sea was running at the time'. \ trawler steamed up to tho rescue, but in getting out her boat it was damaged and broke adrift. Shortly afterwards tho Commander drifted alongside the trawler, with two mei,. clinging to him, and called out to tho.v aboard to take the men up first. Ho supported the pccond man -while tho first was being lmuM aboard the trawler. Eventually all thrco men were rescued in a state of jrreat exhaustion, after having been thirty minutes in the water. The weather was very cold, the'trawler's deck being covered with ice.
