NOTES AND COMMENTS

TBY GLENCOB.I Tho ex-New Zealand rider J. X. M'Rregor, who enlisted with tho -Australian forcos some time back, has received his disohargo from actlvo service and was recently granted a licence to ride by the Victoria Kacing Olub. M'Orogor has suffered many sovcro falls during hiß eiireer »b a Jockey, and ono particularly serious one was at Moonee Valley some four years back, wlion ho had ono of his legs so badly fractured as tho result of a fall in a hurdle nice that it was feared amputation of tho limb would bo necessary. M'Gregor's courage and patienco onco again stood him in good stead and 'by a successful surgical operation, in which wiring played the principal part. M'Gregor still haß two legs. When in Sydney recently (remarks tlio "Beforco") M'Gregor mentioned that between schooling horses over tho jumps and riding them in races-he had experienced over 120 falls. M'Gregor, it may bo mentioned, steered Confide to victory in the V.8.0. Grand National Steeplechase, and Wingarra, winner of the V.R.O. Grand National Hurdle- Race, also scored iu his hands. Matters in connection -.with the Great Northerns continue pretty niuoh in the samo state as at the date of the first acceptances; and no marked alterations, aro anticipated until the Wanganui meeting is through. Thrace- and Fisher may bo said to rulo tho firmest candidates for tlio Great Northern Hurdle Race, while for tho Great Northern Steeplechase, Gluepnt and Collector may be cited as the mqst fancied pair. •It is thought Oolleotor will be a starter in. tho Contury Hurdles at Wanganui, and bo withdrawn from the Wanganui chaseFisher continues to thrive in his work at headquarters, and some enthusiasts intend remaining loyal to his prospects of capturing the Groat Northern Hurdles. Though Parisian Diamond has a big weight in the Cornwall Handicap at EUerslio tho owner of tho Charlemagne gelding has evidently some hopes of capturing tho mile and a quarter race, for ho paid up for the liorso lost Friday.

H. Gray figures at tho head of tho list of winning jockey's in New Zealand this year with 56 winning rides. Hoy Reed follows with 36 and a dead heat.

llho Biccarton jockey, F. EUIb, was reexamined by tho Jledical Board on Monday, hut faikd to va-ss. being classed 02.

According to a Press Association cablegram from Sydney, the Nowcastle stewards ha-vo disqualified lor twelve months the owner, the jockey (P. Nahcr), and tho horso (Admiral Beatty) in conniption with the litter's running at a rccen! meeting.
