STRIKING FALL RESULTS FROM STATE LIQUOR CONTROL. London, May 15. The Liquor Control Board reports 6teady continuous progress in tho control of the liquor trade for tho better prosecution of tho war. Drunkenness is now only one-fourth of its former amount. Whether tho improvement will bo permanent depends on. future legislation; but the experience of three years shows no inherent difficulty in maintaining the present level of sobrioty. Tho board shows that a profit of 15 per cent, has been inado on premises taken under direct control which are known as "food taverns," and in which advertising matter regarding liquor has been abolished. The' board has bcon greatly successful. Eight hundred and forty canteens in tho national factories and docks are providing the workers with good meals at cheap rates, in healthy surroundings. There is a striking fall in female drunkenness in London. In 19U there wore 18,577 cases, and in 1917 only 5730—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
