SEPARATION ALLOWANCES
THE BRITISH FIGURES. An error was made in tho figures purporting to give a comparison of the rates of pay and separation allowances in different parts of the Empire countries which were issued for publication by the office of the Minister of Defence a fetf days ago. It was stated by these- figures that tha rato of separation allowance to a wife alone in Britain was 9s. per week, whereas the rate should have been 12?. Cd. per week, and all tho other rates for men with one child and two children, and 60 on, should have been increased by 3e. 6d. per week. Originally tho pay of a British soldier was 10s. 6d. per week and if lie were married ho was compelled to allot 3s. fid. per wock from this to his wife, making tho actual amount received by the wife 12«. 6d. per week. More recently the rate of separation allowance was increased to 12s. Gd. per week, and the compulsion with regard to the allotment was abolished. Hie figures were compiled on the assumption that the 12s. Cd. a week received by the wife still included tha compulsory allotment of Sβ. Gd. per week In certain cases in England, just- as there> may be in New Zealand, thero may still bo a compulsory allotment, but the. compulsion is not now general.
