ONLY Hi CHAINS TO GO,
Sir William Fraser visited the Ohra tunnel when he was in the South Island recently, going up to the headints at both ends. On his arrival at the Eealey ond last Tuesday tho Minister learned from tho District Engineor there that on that morning about 2 o'clock, the' engine having stopped (with tho result that thoro was silence in the tunnel), tho workmen distinctly heard tho shotn being fired at the Otira oi.d. Tho engineer at onco telephoned to tho Otira works, stating the exact time at which the shots were heard, and tho number of shots, and it was proved that the noise hoard was, Oβ they had supposed, the firing of charges on the Otira faco. In point of fact the two ends of the tunnel woro at that timo within eleven and ft half ohaine of each other.
