HIDES AND TALLOW SALES

.Messrs. Dalgety and, Co. report :—Owing to the Government commandeer of hides having ceased we have again commenced fortnightly sales. Our opening sale took place yesterday, when we submitted a- fair catalogue of hides and tallow, before a good attendance of buyors. Although the embargo on tho export of hides has not yet been removed, the Customs authorities state that all applications for export by buyers will be favourably considered, and we feel confldont that on this point oxportors will not have any trouble in effecting shipments. Competi-tion-was good, but as compared with the recent Hovernment valuations prices arc down all round from about Id. to 2d. nor lb. for hides, with the exception of calfskins, for which prices wore even higher than those obtained under the Government requisition. Bidding for tallow was quiet, and prices are down about 3s. 6d. per cwt. Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co. report:— ',Ve offered 1250 hides, the usual tanners and exporters attending the sale. •Prices, as was expected, ruled easier to the extent of ljd. to 2d. per lb. for light and medium-weight iiides, while Buper heavy hides Bold to within 3d. per lb. of the requisition prices. Calfskins were in keen demand, at prices ranging from Id. to 3d. per lb. over the prices under Government reyt<aition. The tallow market was decidedly t>asier, prices declining fully sa. p?r cwt. on laHt Bales' rates. The N.Z. Farmers' 00-operativo Distributing Co., Ltd., report:-Catalogues comprising 3606 hides and calfskins and about WOO tins and 15-3 casks of tallow were submitted. Buyers from all parts of New Zealand were in good attendance. Competition was keen on. certain lines, especially on sound hidte, yearling, nnd calf. Although competition for tallow was good, values were not quite cfl'ual to those ruling a few vmeki ago, especially as regards tallow In tins. Mossrß. Levin and Co. report :—Tanners aud exporters were welt represented, but the demand for hides was not strong, and prices declined from ljd. to 2d. per lb. for ox and cow. but ?-u advance of Id. to 2sdfor oalf, as oompa-rwi with requisition rates. As market? liava to bo re-estab-lished and organisation of the Dominion's buying trade '.'fi't-c-led once more, exporters are waiting for a standard price to bo eslablißhed, and this in turn largely depends upon the-chipping space available. The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd.. rapork-Thc combined catalogues comsrised s-bow. 36M hides and calfskins; about 150 casks and 1500 tiua and odd oa-ckajr«s of tallow. There was a good attendance of buyers, but as was anticipated a drop rf about l!d. to 2id. per lb. was experienced in light ox ftnd cow hides, except Ir, tie case of a few exceptional lines. Light hides end calfskins were keenly competed for a', about late rates, except for Jiest, calf, which were higher. Tallow in casks was noi wanted, and sold at lower rates than obtained at last auction sales. Tins and odd packages sold at abgut level of last S3-ies. The Wairarapa Farmore' Ca-opetulive Association. Ltd.. with which Is incorporaled the United Farmers' Co-operative Association, report a good attondnnro of buyers. Superior ox hides were lower than former Government requisition prices by about Id. p?r lb. Medium ox and good cow, about 2d. lower. Calfßkins sold wll. and wore about recent Government prices.
