Ho heard tho 'crackle of fire in the celling above his head, nml an immediate investigation- showed tho building to be on flro in the altio between the ceiling and tho roof. Without further ado he secured n patent lire extinguisher, which was kept on the promises, and, training its contents on to the sent .of the outbreak quickly subdued an incipient firo wlucb. might havo meant serious damage to a plant tho value of which could scarce y ,e measured at tho present time. As it is tho -Jamago done was negligible. Tho cause of tho firo is a myatory which the police aro cndeavourniS w BO it°'is only four years ago since the Eastern Cable Company's premises at WakapuaUa wero destroyed by fiio »>» mysterious circumstances.
