WAGON ACCIDENT

CAPSIZE FROM A BRIDGE. A remarkable accident occurred on Thursday last on the high bridge m tho Long Bush, just beyond ltimuroa station, on tho Riversido road (Gisborne). A live-horse wagon with a small load ot posts and stores was making for Waikcrcru station. It appears that the approaches to tho bridgo had been temporarily repaired, and to avoid tho new formation the driver kept well oyer to ono side, but the wheel was within the guard on tho bridge, when it crashed through, causing tho wagon to capsize over tho side, and dragging with it the horse and driver-a fall of 20ft. to 25ft. Tlio driver was thrown clear of tho mass of wreckage. The horses landed on top of each other. Fortunately the manager of tho station and two other men had como down to meet the wagon, and weri> on tho scene ft the timo of the accident. Tho driver (W. Goss) was somewhat shaken and his back slightly injured, but ho was able later on to return to town. Considerable difliculty was experienced in extricating tho horses and wagon, owing to the steep nature of the banks. Ono of tho leaders was killed, and it was lying on top of two of tho shatters for two hours before tho latter could bo released. A width of about 18 inches was broken oil" tho sido of the bridgo, which was in n bad condition, being built of nativo timber (titoki).
