Tho first of tins year's local inter-chib ; matches was played between the . aboveteams at Ngaio on Monday last. The visitors were met at Ngaio l>/ Mr. Brooker (president) and-Mr. .1. A. Conned (Wairaiana) was pitted against Mr. 11. 0 Lee, v. to has played in tho County etas team for over twenty y;ars, and vho on one ocension was tho only player io score a win when tho late 11. N. Pillsbnry (American champion) played twenty opponents simultaneously. Mr. Lyo gained a picco in the mid-game clr.sn, and won strongly. Mr. Coniwll, who got no cliffs during'his six months' stay in Gieymoutii, wns not at his best. Mr. Brooker played the Sicilhn defence at ; board three. Ho got the fwer gnroe, and had hard luck in mi-viing a dtaw in the final stages. In I'onjratulatmar .tins visitors (who won tho match by 11 points to i), Mr. Brooker voiced the general wish that the two clubs should meet oftener than once a year, and stressed the value of theso inter-club- fixtures.
