J Williams. Captain Ueulc was the luililarv representative. . '•'Our ideas are that all single men must eo," remarked the chairman with regardto a case in point. "It is not right that married men should be torn away from their families and single men allowed k> remain at home. Mr M Luckio appeared lor Dame l>. G. Lynch, farmer, Paraparautuu, whose father asked that he bo exempted on the grounds that ho was engaged in an essential industry, and was the last man on tho farm. The father was a coinparalively old man. This was a family which showed a very good record. J lie farm comprised 790 acres, carrying ■1200 sheep and .130 cattle. One brother was on active service and another brother, had been returned wounded. Moris had been made to secure a farm manager at a salary of £1W aud'emoluments, but without avail. The board adjourned the case for further inquiries. The appeal of Harold J. I. Pollock, commercial' traveller, Wellington, was based on the grounds of undue hardship. Jlr. M. Lnckie, who represented Pollock, stated that he was practically the solo support of his aged parents, who were in indifferent health. There was another son, a married man, who had recently been called up in.tho ballot. Appellant was only a Cl man. The case was adjourned till the next sitting in Wellington. Tho .board announced that it was of the opinion that the married brother should attend to vhs. wants of the parents, and thus release the appellant for service. Undue hardship was also advanced by a mother in pleading for her son, Charles' Leslie Wilson, printer, . of Wellington. She stated that she had four sons. Three of these were now serving at tho troniy and sho wished the present reservist, her remaining boy, to remain behind. . The latter supported her. ' . , , "Wo won't take him away just at present" intimated the chairman, "liut.on. the present outlook he may have to go eventually." The case was accordingly adjourned till the first sitting in July. The case of Murdo Mac Donald, slaughterman, Longburn, was adjourned sine die, to be reviewed in August. The. appeals of James Enoch Maddoclc, described as a shearer and station worker, at present engaged in scrub-cutting, and I.awson Stewart, shearer, were dismissed, and appellants ordered to concentrate for the first draft in July. Seafaring Men Exempted. The following cases were adjourned bine die: TvilTiam Matheson, 'bosun; William 'Vlex. Ferguson, fireman; Charles Fitzgerald, fireman; Alfred Serrles, fireman; James Eothbery, care U.S.S. Co.. Wellington; Laureiice Suddens. tn;e scow Echo. ' . ■ Louis Bartosh, market gardener, laita, for whom Jlr. Beecuey appeared, was appealed for by his father. The father stated that one of his sons had been lulled, one was still at the front, and a third had returned wounded, but was unable to follow his occupation. If his son Louis were taken he could not carry on his farm, which was twenty-eight acres in extent. He.could not afford to employ labour, as the property was heavily involved. Ho hud fourteen children, a'number of them of tender years. The chairman told tho appellant that his family had done very.well, but single men could not be exempted. Thecaso would be adjourned till the first sitting of tho board in July, the reservist to be exempted in the meantime. Albert Ernest lerwill, gasfilter, Nai Xai, Lower Hull, was granted a month's extension of leave.
The application of "William Herbert Preston, waterside worker, "Wellington, was adjourned siue die, ponding a report from the Efficiency Board dealing with all persons engaged in this industry. Eric Sydney Dickerson, sheepl'iinner, rijmmerton, was appealed jo , ! b .V his widowed mother. Dickerson said he was recently married, as he had been turned down before on enlisting. He was classed CI. Ho was an only son. Ho {armed llTiO acres, lie was granted three months' leave, the case to be further reviewed by the board in August. Trooper S. Ci. Luxlon, ilakara, Wellington, a returned suldier, was grouted sin."extension of leave of three months, in order to enable him to complete arrangements with regard to a farm he was interested in. The .Registrar of Maori Land Boards appealed on behalf of Jlorris Lomb, accountant of tho Department. Tho appeal was adjourned for two months, until Class C is called up. Tho Eev. Dr. Oibb applied for exemption for Matthew V. Woodward, a master at Scots College. It was represented that tho staff of the collpßO had been seriously reduced einco tho beginning of the war. The case was adjourned sine die. Sergeant-Major V. B. Sl.agpoole, __ ma-chine-gun instructor, .l f eatherston Camp, was temporarily exempted on the application of tho Commandant, on the ground that his services in camp were at present essential. An appeal was made on behalf of Lieutenant James Glendining by tho DefenceDepartment. The ground of appeal was that Glendining was essential as a dental officer, and tho caso was adjourned sine die. No roconimeudation was made by tho board in the caso of Private A. E.-Stock bridge, now on active service. Mr. O. B. Beere appeared to apply for exemption on behalf of Frederick ltobert Morrison, farmer, Wainui-o-mata. Tho ground of appeal was that Morrison, a single man, was a producer of essential i commodities. Tho caso was adjourned to permit of inquiries being lvado as to whether someone elso could not be secured to tako tho reservist's place on the farm. ' No exemption was allowed to ftrnest Hough, who appealed (by Mr. C. B. O'Donnell) on accouut ot the illness ot Mr. c". B. O'Doiinoll appeared to ask for exemption on behalf of Francis Chapman motor mechanic. Chapman, it was Biiid, had two brothers at the front, and the appeal was made on the ground that it was necessary on account of tno health of the mother that one son should remain hero at least until tho return of another son from »ho front. The board declined the request; for temporary exemption. An employer's appeal was lodged by Mr. L. T. Watkins, printer, for the wraiption of his foreman, Iralcrick Hil Porter. Mr. G. G. G. Watson appeared I in support of tho appeal. 'J ho ground of appeal was that owing to tho illness of the head of the house the son, who had just turned twenty pars ot ace, was necessary to carry on the farm. The board dismissed the appeal ot Frederick Plows, evangelist, Waikaime, for whom Mr. D. H. lioggard appeared. Plows annealed on tho ground that no was a minister of the Testimony ot Jesus, but tho board hold to the opinion that this body had no creed, and ■could not thcreforo appeal for ministers in tho "line way as could other rehg.ous bodies. Tho board recommended that Hows be uiven non-combatant service. Tho appeal of Percy Jhdward J. Urhill was dismissed. This man appealed on business grounds. Appellant admitted that ho was a married man although ho i represented himself as single. His w.to ami children were in X'a.uu a but ho <1k iot support them. He said that ho had .ITered his wife a home. He domed that Uo had advised persons not to enlist.
