POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided over n sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday.' Gd. from one l'aino and others on terms requiring him td account for same to Thomson, Lewis and Co., and had failed to do so, also with receiving from Charles I'rentzer XI 13s. on the snine terms, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and ordered to be handed over to the military authorities at the expiration of the term. On the second charge he was convicted and discharged. For being found drunk, Michael Leader, against whom there wero two previous convictions, was fined X 5, in default 1-1 days' imprisonment. George William Jackson, alias Stonewall Jaekson, although credited with having only one previous conviction during the past sis months, really appeared for the one hundred and thirteenth time. He was fined 205., with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. One first offender was fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment. One first offender was fined 10s., in default 21 hours' imprisonment; two others were fined 20s. each, with the alternative of 18 hours' imprisonment; and another, a woman, was fined 205., in default 48 hours, and was ordered to pay XI 18s. 6(1., medical expenses, in default seven davs' imprisonment. John Sluiltman, a Norwegian seaman, charged with being absent from his ship without leave, was further remanded for H days, in the meanwhile to be handed over to the captain of the ship on application. Shultman was remanded last week for mcdical observation, and tho medical report was to the. ofleet that his condition was due to alcohol. William 'Jibson was charged with assaulting a (rarncar conductor named Henry William Hunt. Mr. A. K Seatoii' appeared for the defendant, and Mr. JO'Sliea, Citv Solicitor, for the complainant. According to the evidence the _car was proceeding from Thornr!on_ to Newtown, and when the car reached Stewart Dawson's corner the defendant hoarded" it and was told liy the conductor to get off, as tho car was over-full. The defendant left tho car and .took the next car for Newtown, where l.e resided. In the evening defendant went down towards BuUUford Street with the intention of buying a paper, and met the complainant, whoso car had just come in. Defendant then went up to the conductor and spoke to him, and words led to blows, the conductor being struck on the mouth and his lip cut. After hearin" evidence the Magistrate fined tho defendant .£3 and costs 65.. half, tho fine to be handed over to the complainant.
