SOUTHERN MARKET

By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, May 3. There is very little business ' of any kind doing in grain and produce, mainly due to tlio fact that merchants do not know whero, to store any further quantity. The steamer sailing for the north to-day is reported to have left fifty wagon*, loads on the wharf.' A special steamer will be on the berth nest week to load chaff only for Auckland, and freight has been increased from 355. to 455. per ton by her. It is not expected, . however, that this boat can take one--tliird of the chaff waiting shipment. Wheat is still coming forward slowly. The oats market is easier, in conscquonco of prices having declined in the south. Chaff remains nominally the same. There is a fair demand for potatoes at late rates, but the market is uneasy, bccauso of reported lower prices in Melbourne. Merchants are holding off white clover at present, and the quotation, Is. 9d. tfl 2s. iit stations, is only nominal, and further purchases are likely to lie at lower figures.
