A RAID THAT FAILED
ATTEMPT TO SINK ITALIAN NAVAL VESSELS. ' Rome, May 30. The details have been announced of a raid by sixteen Austrians, with the object of blowing up a. submarine "flotilla and sinking torpedo-boats in Ancona harbour. The sixteen men landed ceventeon miles from Ancona, heavily armed, and carrying bombs and a supply of dynamite. Tho Austrian uniform so resembled tho Italian that the coastguards saluted, and allowed the men to pass. Tho party hid in a cottago during tho daytimo, whilo two of the men, disguised as peasants, spied out tho position of tho vessels in port. At luidnigbt, the party, . iboing mistaken for a naval patrol, passed through the town and reached lho harbour. They stabbed tho sentry guarding the boats, and tried'to seize tho motor-boats, but failed. Finally thoy took refugo in a sugar refinery, and prepared to fight to the last.. Meanwhile; one of the party (jeserted, and disclosed the presence of his companions. Ten Carabineers went to the refinery, and the Austrians, though armed to the teeth, surrendered igno-miniously.-Aiis.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
