Clarke Johnson (chief inspector lor New Zealand) said it would be very difficult, if not impossible, (o replace'Shand, who was tho company's manager at Napier. SI land's salary was Ji&'.O a year, and it meant that his haif-pay, allowed to all employee-; id the front, would cost the company ,000 a year. Their employees i:i camp or on -iclive service numbered lfc'6, and four cr five olhen, had since been ordered into camp. Twenty-eight had been killed and 31 wounded. No appeals had been made by tho company before, and half-pay.' paid to all, now amounted to between .flti.OOO and .1:17,000 a year.
