J The Japanese Consul-General at Sydney, Mr. Shimuzi, is expected to arrive in New Zealand this week. ! _ Mr. Mark Cohen, editor of the "Evenj ing Star," Dunedin, arrived in Welling- ; ton yesterday morning. Mr. H. M'Cailum, it. P., Mr. T. S. Foster, and Miss E. A. Chaplin have been elected, members of the Council of Education. A Frp£s Association message from Sydney announces the death of Mr. John Richard Houlding, author, 'and one of Ihe founders of the Now South Walei Alliance. Private T. Ruane, who left with the Sixteenth Specialists, has removed to Fenfhereton, invalided from India, where he suffered a serious illness. Private Stanley Kirby, formerly of the news room staff of The Dominion, and now a member of ono of tho reinforcement drafts, was last evening presented by his late associates, on The Dominion •with a. wristlet, watch, as a token of esteem, togother with a silver tea service as a wedding gift. Tho presentation was made by Mr. W. W. Todd, the Printer. Corporal David C. Cole, previously reported missing, now reported as killed in action on October -t, was the second sou of Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Cole, of Onehunga, and left New Zealand as a sergeant in the Sixteenth N.Z.E.F. After .three months' special training nl '.fidworth (Sling) his stripes were confirined, and, although, he was offered a position as instructor, lie preferred going over (o France, where Ire "threw in" his stripes in order to join up with his old Grammar School comrades in Lewis gun work. At Mossines ho was the only man left of his team, and after carrying, out his mortally wounded chum returned and rescued his Lewis gun. For his conspicuous conduct, in this advance he was recommended by his O.C. for distinction. Regaining his stripes, he underwent a special course in bombing. He was killed at. Passchendaole on October i while leading his section there. Lieutenant E. A. Robinson, second son of Air. William Robinson, of lliccarton, has returned lo New Zealand. Lieutenant Robinson enlisted in. New Zealand, but was rejected on medical grounds. He therefore went to Enghnd early in 1915, with the intention of obtaining war employment of some sort i.here. _ Enlisting again, he obtained a commission in the West Surreys, but was detained in England as a signalliag instructor. For a considerable period he was on coast patrol duty. Recently he was invalided and sent into hospital. He is now convalescent.
Mr. John Fitzgerald has been, appointed Registrar of Electors for tho Neleon district. Sergeant D. Sionpo, nephew of Mr. J. Stoupo, Deputy-Mayor of Onehunga, has been wounded for the fifth time. He enlisted with tho Main Body, and left'with tho First Wellington Infantry Regiment. Ho gained tho Military Medal at the Battlo of Messines. . Lieutenant A. Jennings, M.C., Northumberland Fusiliers, who was wounded some' months ago, writing to his father, Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Taumaninui, 6ays that ho was at the Isle of Wight for two months. On leaving Oaborno Castle- Hospital, lie applied for entrance to the Royal Flying Corps, owing to his left foot being weak from the wounds lie received on August 28 lust. There were 200 candidates, and he passed with hououra in practical and theoretical work, and was given the post of pilot. He was at the Balloon Training Depot at Putney on ?.I;\rak I. Mr. George A. Highland, producer of "Katinka" for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., arrived in Wellington yesterday from IJunedin.
