MIRAMAR BOROUGH
MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. The Mayor (Mr. P. Townsend) presided over the meeting of the Miramar Borough Council held last evening. There wore present: Councillors S. H. Underwood, H. Hawthorn, and H. K. Itobertshaw. A letter was received .from Messrs. Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers with respect to the hording of cattle in the borough by Mr. Toli'ord. The Acting-Town Olerk was instructed by the council recently to notify all owners of cattle in the borough Cat tiie by-law relating to wandering cattle would be enforced. Messrs. Bell, Gully, Bell, a.ud Myers wrote: "We cannot suppose your.letter was intended to refer to the large area of land on which during certain hours of the day Mr, Telford herds his cattle, having, regard to the fact that when the cattle are so herded they are under proper control, with a man in charge to prevent thoir wandering away from the land. It would bo quite out of the question, Mr. Telford informs us, for hiui to fence the laud." The solicitors indicated that if the by-law was intended to refer to a case like Mr. Tolford's it was invalid, and if any proceedings were taken under the law they would be resisted. The Mayor explained that the by-law was based on the Act and only had reference to cattle waudering in the streets of the borough. The letter was received. The circular letter of tho New Zealand Educational Institute with Tespect to improvements in education, as sent to all local bodies, was received, and the councillors decided that thn matter of education ivas not within their province.
