Bridge, New Zenland Rifle Brigade, who returned from tho front in January, invalided as the result of a wound received in action in Flanders, reported for ,duty at Feathorston Camp on Tuesday. ■ Tho death occurred yesterday of Mr. James John Flyger, an old and respected resident of Wellington, who has for many years conducted an undertaking business in Cuba Street. The late Mr. Flyger, who died suddenly, was 69 years of age. Ho was a momber of tho Newtown Bowling Club, and on one occasion presented tho centre with a shield, to bo played for annually.

The death of Mn John Aiken, at Sumner, has removed another of the country's pioneers. Mr. Aiken arrived in Nelson from Scotland in 185G, where soon afterwards he joined,.the well-known firm of Nathaniel Edwards and Co., as accountant, remaining in their employ till IW3. In that year, with Mr. John Connal, ho commenced business in Christchurch under the stylo of Edwards, Bennett and Co., bho firm consisting ot Messrs. Nathaniel Edwards, George Bennett, John Aiken, and John Connal. Mr. Aiken retired, from the firm in 1887. and paid a visit to the Old Country, where he resided until about five years ago, when ho returned to tlio Dominion. Since retiring he has resided in several parts, finally settling down in Sumner. Mr. Aiken took very little active part in public affairs, but few men followed'tho affairs of the young colony closer than ho did.fl Ho was an excellent examplo of that straightforward Scottish commercial character that has left its impress on many business concerns throughout tho Empire. Mr. Aiken married m 1861 a daughter of Mr. Joseph Garrard, of Harwich, Essex, who survives her husband.
