In regard to tho shorlago of shipping space and tonnage, tho opinion is generally held aipongEt shippers that t,ho Goiernmont ought-to-regulate tho shipping of unnecessary goods (says tho Christchurch "Sun"). It has been suggested that the Government should bo moved to commandeer a. largo boat to lift tho cargo that has accumulated in Canterbury for the North Island, ports. This suggestion has been forwarded- to tho • Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, who, it is understood, are to t-ako action in tho natter. Tho Northern Company's liimu, -which •was aground on a bank in tho south channel, ilanitkau Harbour, sinco Wednesday, -was floated off on Saturday morning. The mishap is said to be due to one of tho channel buoys having shifted from its proper position. Such "annual shipbuldng returns" as have boen publshed for tho year 1917 aro very unsatisfying productions (says London "I'airplay"). Even in former years the figures required a good deal of adjustment before wo could ascertain their real value, but this year there lmvo been no figures to speak of. Tho veil of war conditions has boen gradually becoming heavier, and for 1917 it has blotted out all tho Allies, including America., nnd also both the enemy shipbuilding countrios. Only tho neutrals are loft, and their work cannot bo judged or commented upon to any purpose, because it forms such n small proportion of a very large whole. Holland was credited with having launched 185 vessels, aggregating over 222,000 tons; Norway .with 76 vessels, aggregating j 48,000 tons; Sweden 48 vossels, of 39,000 tons; Denmark with 38 vessels, of .24,000 Ions; and fiptiin<: with 11 vessels aggregate I ing 23,M0 tons. Tho Dutch total was | slightly higher than that of 1916, and bo was the Norwegian total. Tho Spanish total was double that of 1916, but tho totals of Denmark and Sweden woro lower than their record for 1916. With a full cargo of coal for dischargo at Wellington and Wauganui, the Ngatoro is due here to-morrow morniug from Oreymouth, leaving Jator in tho day for Wanganui. Tho Waverley went on tho slip yesterday for annual inspection and overhaul, which will tako place to-morrow night. Whe will probably sail on Thursday for Patca; ~ , , i Bad weather has considerably delayed tho Koutunui, which is coming to Wellington from Napier via coast stations. Sho is expected to reach port to-morrow, and wilt sail the s'amo day for East Coast station*. In continuation of tho round trip of tho South Island lighthouses, the Hinemoa left Westport yesterday afternoon for Wellington, via Tho Brothers, and is due to-night. In a few days' timo she wilt visit several of the Cook Strait lighthouses to land stores, eto. Tho training ship Araokura, will leave Dunedin this morning for Wellington, via the West Coast, arriving liero in about ton days' time. ♦
