MANAWATU GORGE ROAD
APPEAL FOR GOVERNMENT AID,
'J'he upkeep of (lie Manawatu Gorge •Road, a stretch of highway that is dimcult to maintain, has for many, years been a matter on 'which the interested local bodies have been unable to agree. Some time ago a commission was appoint, ed to go into the cost of upkeep and to allocate the different amounts of money the several local bodies would be required to pay. The people most concern, ed wci-e not at the time, nor are they now satisfied with the recommendations of tho commission, and they were represented on a -deputation of twelve local bodies in tho llanawatu district which waited yesterday on the Prime Minister ttiivMassey),. : Sir Joseph-Ward, and Sir .William leaser. They had come to ask for assistance from, the Government, eeneciallv in connection with the erection Sf a Xoposod .new brid«, "commenfcd by tho , commission,,; which is to tost "^rhe 0 Minister of Public Works discussed with" the deputation ihe details of the proposals, and: pointed out to them that whilo they must be prepared to he P themselves the Government would afford reasonable assistance, especially, towards tho cost of,tho bridge. ...■■■■_•■-
