WIRE ROPES
4 attempts to secure supplies. Hon. Arthur Myers,■ Minister-in-l/haige of Munitions and Supplies, has for some time past been taking active steps to ondeavour to secure even in many cases the partial execution of a number of orders placed by New Zealand importers with English manufacturers. From advices which have been received, it is gathered that the High Commissioner and those interested in this matter in London huva brought considerable pressure to bear u>pon tuo authorities concerned, but without complete satisfactory results. As a consequence of this, Mr. Myers asked for spccial advice in regard to the matter, and as a result of confidential information which ha? been supplied, he is of opinion that there are good and substantial reasons for the Imperial authorities refusing at present to permit the exportation of ropes, although this action may even go so far us to detrimentally affect some of tie industrial activites of the Dominion. However, in view of the importance of securing certain orders required for coal-mining and like vital enterprises, the. High Commissioner has been requested to keep in close touoh with the manufacturers and Ministry of Munitions in tlio United Kingdom. It is trusted that some slight relief may bo afforded, but it would appear that for the present there is little prospcot of orders being immediately executed. It is gathered from advices which have been received that tho Ministry of Munitions has found it necessary to decline to consider further cabled recommendations in regard to wire ropes, and has stipulated for the veity fullest particulars to be forwarded on the Departmental application forms which are familiar to importers.
