THE RUSH FOR COAL
a A BIG DEMAND. Ou Wednesday tho Stalo Coal Depart" meut's office registered over 1600 orders for coal in household quantities, and yesterday the booking of orders continued steadily throughout the day. The rush was such that tho amount to l» delivered as soon as supplies are to han<l was reduced yesterday from 2c\vt. to lcwt. for city people. A steamer has arrived in port with State coal, but owing to timber and general cargo being stacked on top of tliie coal, it could not be discharged yesterday. This means that" the majority of the orders booked since Wednesday morning will not be delivered, until next week. Tho rush for State coal is easily explained. On account of the general shortage, coal merchants (other than the State business) have only been able to supply their regular customers, and those who as a rule obtain their supplies from 'tho State depot have iliad to go without until such time as tho State collieries resumed work. The position in Christchurch and Dunedin has been practically the same as in Wellington.
