WAIRARAPA NOTES
« At a meeting of the Wairarapa Presbytery, held in Masterton on Tuesday, it was decided that eacli congregation fall in with such local arrangements as may be made in connection with Anzac Day. A few days ago a resident of Nireaha, named Percy Roband, was kicked by horses whilst engaged in ploughing operations. He was very severely injured, and was brought to'the Masterton Hospital, where he lingered until Tuesday morning, when he died. The deceased, who was thirty-one years of age, leaves a widow and five children. At a meeting <*f the Greytown branch of the Farmers' Union it was decided to support the remit of the Gladstone branch in reference to the unification of labour on the wharves. Mr. H. Cook was appointed delegate to the provincial conference. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr. W. J. Welch, chairman of the Masterton County Council, the conference which was to have been held in Masterton on Wednesday relative to allocating the cost of the new Waingawa Bridge was postponed. The question of increasing the pay of the working staff of tho Masterton County Council, which is at present Us per day, was considered at n meeting'of the 'council on Tuesday, but no action was taken. The Masterton County Council has an overdraft at date of £4056 los. Gd. Rabbits have increased with such rapidity in the Wairarapa during the last year or two that they are occasioning serious apprehension to farmers. Another military deserter was brought to Masterton from Pabiatna on Tuesday, and handed over to the military authorities. The price of tobacco in tins has been increased in Masterton from Is. Id. to Is. 3d. The wet. treather experienced in the Masterton district has occasioned heavy loss to growers of clover seed. Ono i settler estimates his loss at about' £101)0. Mr. A. 1.. Wadhnin, of Masterton, lias entered a pen of Indian Runner ducks for tho Christ-church egg-laying competition, and toy Reliable Poultry Farm has entcrcrt -a pen of Whitu Leghorns. Mr. T. Wilsoti has been appointed by the Wairarapa Presbytery to act as home missioner nt Pongiiroa, in succession to Mr. M 'KntzU,. The Wairarapa Presbytery lias granted the ]'to». ft. 0 Tiplrv. who is now on active service, an additional six months' leave of absence. Mr. Harry Hogg, formerly a missionary m South America, has been appointed to supply the Presbyterian parish of Carterton In the absence of tho regular minister. At the monthly meeting of Ijoyal Unity Lodge of Oddfellows (Foatherslon) a welcome homo was accorded to Tiro. Private L. G. Benton, who, following upon being severely wounded six months back, and having for several months been under treatment at Hanmcr, has been restored to good health.
