By Telegraph-Press AoEociatioii-CopvriEht Sydney, April 9. Commenting on Desert Gold's superiority over her Australian- rivals, the "Sun" says;—"As far as concerned the form of . the horses competing this autumn, Desert Gold stood out as a ihampioit up to one and a-half miles and in weight-for-ago races. Wedge was lucky to beat her in the Futurity Stakes. Although some of the New Zealand critics advised their Australian friends that she might show the eflects of all her racing when stripped in Australia, they proved to bo wrong. Apart from an inoxhauatible supply of vitality, which means speed, Desert Gold has a wonderful constitution. During her stay of seven weeks her trainer never once found her sick or sorry, dcspit« all- the gaUoping and travelling. As a matter of faot, she improved with tho racing, and was much better the day she won the i Stakes than when sho began her j cSmpaign. Desert Gold even surprised her admirera in that race. Many, good judges declared that thev had never seen one good performer beat another as good as Cetigne so decisively in all their experience o£ racing." YEARLING SALES. .. , Sydney,, April 9. At the yearling sales a Linacre filly fetched 105 P guineas, NOTES AND COMMENTS [By Glencoe.] Secretary J. M. Johnston, of the Mann-' watu. Racing Club, must bo moro than pleased with the acceptances'received for 1 next weeks meeting, au<l if there is a . drawback at all ife will bo owing to the large size of the fields, some of which are, altogether too big. Big fields, have : their disadvantages, as they restrict speculation. In the five handioan events there aro 130 acceptors, or an.. average of 26 per 'race. It will ,thus "ha seen j uat smul work will be required from all tho officials if tho races are to be got" off to time. • Tho South Canterbury Meeting will take Place to-morrow and Friday. There is a card of seven events on each day. Tho imported horso Gay Lad, who created a i favourable impression at tho Riccarton Meeting is an acceptor in ttireo events. Desert Gold -will bo kept in work at Woodville until the Awapuni Gold Cup' cornea on for decision. P. Davis, who cllilr eo of the champion daughter of All Black and Auraiius, states that she did wonderfully well on tho trip from' Australia, and -was a splendid traveller - Tho victories of the Now Zealander had -been well received by all shades in the Commonwealth, and a hearty reception was always accorded her when sho raceS Davis thinks tho mare will be as fit next week as ever sho was in her life, and he anticipates a very fnst race in the Gold Cup. Nothing definite will be decided as to whether Estland will start until Davis sees tho colt at work and has conferred with ITr. Lowry. Investments of half a crown can now he made by outside patrons of the totalisator at Handwick. On tho opening day of the A.J.O. Meeting tho totalisator ■ Btaff put through the snm of £38 000. The Waikanae-bred Watta (AohUlesStopina) died recently in Brisbane. He roared up and falling back broke his neck. He cost 610gns. as a yearling, and had won some minor ovents In tho Northern State. • Dame Acre, who won tho A.J.O. Doncaster Handicap on Saturday week, is the first favourite to score in tho event Binco the Victorian mare Wakeful was -successful in 1901. It is a ourious fact that.L. Walker, who was to havo piloted Dame
Acre, was ordered to stand down through interference ut Hawkcsbury with Mehi Kins, ridden by Maher, and in consequence of tlj? former's suspension and tho subsequent withdrawal of Mehi King, Maher was fortunate enough in securing the mount, when efforts to engage K. Bracken and P. Dompsey had failed. Dame Acre has now won a total of £5360 in stakes, the value of the Doncaster prize being approximately £1727. Visiting horses havo already arrived at Awapuni in large numbers, and there should be a lot of interesting track work at the end of the. week. Bain fell at Palmerston North yesterday, but, It was not sufficient to seriously affect the going. In addition to Kilboy, Good Day and several Australian purchaees have arrived in New Zealand in charge of M. Hobbs. Good Bay is to be sent home to Hastings, and the others go south. Informal was probably left in the Sires' Produce Stakes at Awapuni in error, and there does not seem much likelihood of him being sent to Awapuni after his showing at Avondale. Tho form of Red. Pennant in the Australian Cup and Sydney Oup was much below what waf expected of him, and it does not look as if Mr, E. J. Watt's hoTso is half as good as was his fullbrother Bunting. The locally-owned Monelaus iB to contest the Awapuni Gold Oup. He will be accompanied to the meeting by the steeplechaser Coalition, who is to be given a race in the Hack Welter Handicap. Sweet Corn did a, pleasing gallop in fast; time at Riccarton on Saturday. G. Jones was to .leave Christchurch last night with his team for tho Manawatu meeting. Biplane and Afterglow, who will probably be Mr. G. D. Greenwood's representatives at Palmerston North,-were galloped at Riocarton on Saturday. Biplane went six furlongß with Afterglow as a companion over the List four. _ They ran home in good time without being extended. "trotting AUCKLAND CLUB ACCEPTANCES.
