MILITARY APPEALS
FIRST WELLINGTON BOARD CASES HEARD YESTERDAY | The First Wellington Military ScrJiVics Board sat in the city yesterday. [Tho board consists of Messrs. D. G. A. 'hooper, S..M. (chairman). AY Perry, (and D. M'Lareu. Captain Walker is ithe military representative. ■ An appeal for Private L. C. Kelly, whose mother is ill, was adjourned till i the nest sitting of the board. j Wilfred Gordon Punch, piano ■ Hll isher, Lyall Bay, appealed on tho ■ground that lie was not a reservist. 'He said that he was an Australian, and ■had come to New Zealand to assist in .the establishment of a new business.. His appeal whs adjourned to to-day for ,the production of applicant's passport. i. Mr. R. J. S. Hickson, whose son, jttunner Wilfred Hickson,, has served a 'long term at. the front and is now in [■Wellington, applied for indefinite leave iior his son. Tho board did not grant tyhe application. ■ An appeal for Robert Gardner, iinarine officer, was dismissed. , The "New Zealand Times" appealed jjfor further leave for James Devine, Leave was extended till \Jurie 24. . The return of Sapper C. v. M'Hardio ; Was applied for by Mr. J. M'Hardie, jiightwatchman at the Government 'Buildings. The appeal was eventually withdrawn. Frank Wareing, railway linesman, Was given leave till May 28. Leave till May 28 was given in the lease of S. P. Sullivan, the last boy left :'of a family of seven sons. His mother, lad been twelve years a widow. Mrs. M. E! Rafter applied for the return of her husband, who is at. Codford Camp in the postal service. The application was not allowed. Mrs. C. Geange, Upper Hutt, asked ;£or the return of Private A. V. Geange, ibut agreed, at the request of the chair-* taan, to withdraw the application in the meantime. Tho return from the front of Norman '■M. Russell was requested, by his 'brother, a Hutt Valley farmer. , After .discussing the matter with the board 'he agreed to withdraw.the application. Mr. J. G. Bruce, secretary of the iWatersiders' Union, appealed for Wil{Ham V. Ellen, a watersider, oil the Iground that he was a worker in an {essential' industry. Decision was reserved. The return from the front of Rifle(Jnan W. Beresford James was sought 'by Mrs. E. James, Berhampore, who isaid that she had three sons at the front.' This boy had done his duty already, arid in addition was not fit to ibe left at the-front any.longer. The 'application was not allowed. j Mrs. Edith Brady, Kilbirnie, asked (for the return to New Zealand of her (■brother, Rifleman M. E. Oliver, who had been ill in the vicinity of the front 'for eighteen months. He was her only living relative, and" she feared from' the nature iof tho, reports of his health 'that he would develop consumption unless returned. Finally Mrs. Brady the. appeal. j A. A. A. "Mansford, typewriter Wechanic, was appealed for by his emRployer on the ground that he was ressential and could not' be replaced. .■{Leave till July 23 was granted, i An appeal.for. A. G.. Scott, .a head ' shipping clerk, was adjourned till July, j and endeavour is to be made to replace 'him. The appeal of J. P. Queenan, slaugh; : iJerman, was adjourned sine die. ■ | An application for ■ discharge' _by f'Gunner J. Walsh, a returned soldier, (was dismissed. I An appeal was made for David S., iThorbnrn, stationmaster, and leave till 'June 25 was, allowed. The following appeals of men under fego wero .allowed: —J." J. Hopkirk,' cadet farmer; 0., G. Marple, accountant, Vogeltown; C. E. Forrest, warehouseman. > It was stated that Hopkirk had enlisted and was awaiting medical examination.
