MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE AND CIVIL CASES. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided and dealt with the police cases. Jean A. Anderson was charged with assisting in the management of a house of ill-fume, No. 45 Frederick Street, contrary to tho War Regulations of August 21, 1916. Samuel Crossley was charged with keeping a house of ill-fame, No. 45 Frederick Street. Thomas Connolly was charged with residing in a house of' ill-fame. Niels Mannovan was charged with assisting in the management of a house of ill-fame, No. 45 Frederick Street. Mr. H. E. Evans appeared for all four'defendants, who pleaded not guilty and were remanded to Friday next on the application of Inspector Marsack. Bail was allowed, Anderson and Crossley in the sum of £200 encli and two sureties of £100 - each, and Connolly and Mannovan in the sum of £50 each and two sureties of £25 each.
For iußobriety one first offender was fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment. CIVIL CASES. Mr. W. G. lliddell, S.M., dealt with the civil cases. Judgment was given for plaintiff by defaulo in the following cases: —11. Oscar Hewett and. Co., Ltd. (in liquidation) v. Elizabeth Sullivan, £6.05. 6d., costs £1 19s. 6cl; William Howorth v. J. Taylor,, £1 Is. 6d., costs 65.; Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., v. George do Mauser, £6 65., costs £1 3s. 6d.; Samuol G. Waddle, £11 6s. 9d., costs £1 10s. 6d.; same v. A. H. Hillary, 3s. costs only; W. M. Bannatyno and Co., Ltd., v. A. C. Barnes, £9 10s., costs £1 10s. 6d.; Whitcombc and Tombs, Ltd., v. the Motor Supplies Stores, £15 2s. 5d., costs £1 10s. 6d.; Hope, Gibbons and Sous, and J. B. Clarkeon, Ltd., ,v. Li M'Mullan, £51 6s. 7d.. costs £1 ]os.; Wellington Musicians Union v. Charles Fleming, £1 45., costs 65.; Miraiuar Building and Investment Co., Ltd., v. Alfred Smith, £14 75.. 6d., costs £1 10s. 6(1..; Inglis Bros, and Co., Ltd., v. Edward Clinch, £28 2s. 9d., costs £1 35.; City Corporation v. Margaret Watson, £18 3s. 4d., costs 15s. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. Judgment summons cases were dealt with as follow:—Clifford Smith was ordered to pay Fitzgerald and Pearco, £4 6s. Id., by April 23, in default three days' imprisonment; William Thompson was ordered to pay Arthur Smith, £10 14s. 3d., by April 23, or undergo ten clays' imprisonment.
