PRISONER OF WAR IN TURKEY

'4— « : ''; NEW,. ZMLANDEE'S EXPERIENCE.•Such, details of life in a Turkish camp for prisoners of war as are allowed to be given by the men are- contained in a letter received from a New Zealand soldier, Private W. K. Surgenor, of Otakelio, Taranaki. Private Surgcnor, who was a member of the Main Body, was wounded in August 8, 1915, and was for some time in Turkish hospitals. He has written in previous letters of tho good treatment he received in the hospitals. The following letter was written at Adabazar on October 28, 1917 ."Just a few;lines to let you know we are still here,' -and getting along fairly well. Wo get a half-day off every week now, besides Sunday, and get our game of football. I play soccer with the rest. We are "trying to get up a game of Rugby soon, but Bugby is not very well known amongst regular soldiers. At all our previous games we have had a certain number of spectators, with fixed bayonets, expecting every minute to see someone making a break for free air, though here wo have a lot more liberty, owing chiefly, to our isolated position. Also, the hills around allow of a little latitude; we can go into the bush any evening • with a sentry and gather our supply of dry wood. Our messes are made up of twos mostly, owing to the cooking for a, larger number. Where no cooks are allowed, as I mentioned before, we have three. Turkish meals n day, cooked for us'by"two of our own cooks, though:!, would sooner have a good plate of . por•ridge than any of these'. The'meal con-.; 'sists of- a handful of crushed wheats-flav-ouredwith a little salt; boiled for two or three hours, a little boiled olive oil, is added to taste, and the dish is served hot for fivo or. six hungry men.—Our menu now. chiefly isDinner—come in froni work and! fry a couple of eggs to eat with bread after wheat soup; for tea we boil a small pot of potatoes and pumpkin to eat with our soup; for breakfast we, always leave a few cold potatoes, .• and if we get up early fry them and eat them with our sonp.. On Sundays we usually buy a little flour if any money ia in the 'firm," and fry a few sultana cakes. Carbonate of eoda is greatly used here as a substitute for baking powder. A. lot of tobacco is grown around here. We used to get a very small issue of tobacco, also s'ome from the Embassy. Now we neither get ,the High Commissioner's paroels nor money, and must find all " these luxuries I have learned to speak Turkish fairly well, also a - little French. I oc.n also pass the time of day to many nationalities. I can use the bakehouse if I work on Sundays, but I am not doing anything -now until Christmas, .when I can make it,worth while. If anybody wonts to know how I am let them write, letters are to us as cheques are to farmers. I break as much stone hero a day as would earn me Is. !)tl. a day at home. Ido it for love here. I do not think I will ever feel like an honest day's work again unlels I have something more kindly to coax'nie than fixed bayonets." . THE "DEPTH BOMB",, . —# J , The cable news has frequently referred to the effectiveness of-"depth bombs" in the destruction ,t>f the Üboats. An American writer, in explaining the precise results which follow the explosion under tho water of-, these bombs, says that all explosives generate an enormous amount of gas. High explosives generate an extra volume of pas; a cubic inch of water expands into a cubic foot of, steam at atmospheric pressure. This is 1728 times the volume of the water. When a depth bomb is exploded under water, the gas causes enormous pressure in all directions. What gives way? The water between the bomb,. and the surface is pushed upward, is throwu into the air until the gas can escape. But if a submarine is nearer to the exploding bomb than the surface! it is the shell of the boat which has to stand the fearful and sudden pressure. It yields; it may crush like an eggshell, or perhaps the platos start, and the air in the U-boat escapcs, water fills it, and it sinks. This afternoon the final for the TliorndOn Bowling Club's champion rinfe will be played, Hogben v. Wilson. The season- will ho brought to a- close on the following Saturday. Hataitai teams for to-day v. Seat'ouii at Seatflun are:—Edwards, Sliorney, Matthews, Blake (s.); M'Lean, Wilson,' Clark, Roberts (s.). Tile only animals left alive in the Antwerp. Zoo are the elephants, which are now being used for military traction purposes. Sir J. Madden, K.C.M.G., etc., Lieuten-ant-Governor and Chief Justice of Victoria, when delivering judgment in a . . case in which an inferior substitute had been pushed as "just as good" n« SANGER'S EUCLATPTI EXTRACT, said: with regard to tho GENUINE SANDETi EXTRACT: "Whenever an articlo iR commended to the public by reason of Its good quality, it is not. pc-rmissiWn using a medicine it is "good quality" that you want, and SANDER'S EXTRACT has the endorsement and approval of tho highest authorities. Inhaled, : *ppliod locally, taken on 6ugar or in water as directed, SANDER'S EXTRACT i6-equally beneficial because it-is specially refined and prepared by Sander s pro"cess, and-contains no harmful by-effects. • U«e SANDER'S EXTRACT only when ■ you desire good and lasting effects; no 'just as good."—Advt.
