Tlie appeal was responded to enthusiastically by every memberof the company, including the orchestra, tho stage hands, and. the front-of-house . staff. To add interest.to the occasion, the J. 0/Williamson, Ltd., manage-, ment havo purchased two £5 War Bonds, and every purchaser of a ticket will Save an opportunity of winning one of the bonds." During.'the'coming week the lady members of tho opera company wili make a-personal attack on the city, when it is hoped that they will sell enough tickets to fill the Opera House' 011 Saturday afternoon. Tho War Bonds will be raffled on the stage during the performance of "Mr. Manhattan" on Saturday. An audacious robbery was committed at the Star Hotel, Lincoln Road, on Saturday evening (says a Christchurcb paper), the amount stolen being £40, land tho victim being Mr. W. Nidd, ' the licensee-of the hotel. _ Mr. Nidd is well known in racing circles as tho owner of Pcronilla, and formerly was in Wellington. There was heavy traffic - along the Lincoln Road that evening of neoplo returning from the trots at ' Aduington. A number of the i | ing-racegoers called.in at the . Star | -Hotel about 7 p.m., and were attended to in tho dining-room, Mr. Nidd mc-an-I while being engaged in the bar arranging matters after ' the day's work. | While s 'he' was thus engaged a'number of those who- had been in the diuingrooni came into the bar, and asked that they should be served with drinks with their meal. Mr. Nidd, it appears, left the bar-in search-of the barman, leaving tho company, which, consisted of , soldiers, civilians, and returned - men, in the bar. On Mr. Nidd's.' returii there was a rush for the door, and subsequent "investigation revealed the fact that a sum of £40 had been stolen during the licensee's brief absence. Tho Camp Commandant at Trcntham acknowledges with thanks .recoipt of a parcel of books from Mr. k. Wells, Wni-iti Road, Timaru, which has been distributed, in camp.
