GANG OF THIEVES
« DEPREDATIONS IN RAILWAY SERVICE. Melbourne, March 22. Startling alienations regarding the extent of pillaging in the railway service and the existence of an organised gang of thieves engaged in the depredations, were made by Mr. Wynne, ex-Minisleiwor Railways, when speaking in the Legislative Assembly on the railway estimates. Mr. Wynne said that there was an organised gang of thieves in the Tailyray servico, and thev would havo to be rooted out These men were a great menace to honest railway men. Thieves would put stolen goods into an honest mans kit or locker, and thus bring suspicion upon him. When men could steal a truck of wool between Newmarket an.l Spencer Street, worth £(100, it showed a pretty state of affairs. There were men in the Railwav Department who had been proved to 1)6 thieves, yet they were kept on During his term of office as Attor-ney-General ho tame across the papers . of one man who had been convicted ol SO offences; these included the receiving of stolon goods. He had damaged the property of tho Commissioners to the ex* tent of several hundreds or pounds by his gross carelessness. This very man at one time cleared out and left his wine on the Hno, io tne groat danger of the rest of tho traffic, yet he was kept 011 m the service. In o no c,ise 11 man, who had several sons at tho war, was dismissed because he lmd reached GO years of age, whilst another man, who had been convicted of stealing and was also over 60 vears of age. had V-en kept on. The Minister for Railways promised an investigation into the matter.
