BANNED LITERATURE
DEPUTATION TO A MINISTER. By Telcgraph.-Prcss Association. Auckland, March 30. A deputation from the Loyal .Orange Lodge and the Protestant Political Association interviewed the Hon. A. M. Myers to-day, and stated that they desired to obtain certain publications on Romanism from other countries. As Minister of Customs, Mr. Myers had decided he could not allow the importation. The Rev. Mr. Smith said this literature was required to counteract certain disloyalty. If the Government continued to stop it coming in, then the Protestants would speak. Mr. Myers: Is that a threat? Mr. Smith: "It is no threat; it is a statement of fact." They would support tho National Cabinet so long as the Cabinet acted in the best interests of tho .country. If this literature was false, tho Roman Catholics could easily prove its falsity. Dr. Reekie, representing the Protestant Political Association, expressed similar views.
Mr. Myers said he had seen the literaturo in question, and had consulted Mr. Massey. They had decided that it would be prejudicial to recruiting, and had stopped it coming into the country. They had to recognise that the Empire was at war. It- was necessary to present a united front, particularly in view of the critical situation now existing. Ho suggested that their views were one-sided, but promised to bring them before Cabinet soon.
