V ICE-REGAL. .Mis Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool have returned to Wellington from Christchurch. They will attend the performance of "Tho Red Widow" this evening. Tho Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P., returned on Saturday from Auckland. Kii route from the northern city Jlr. Luke stopped over 'at Ohakune and spent Good Friday going over ihe scene nf the recent bush fires. Mr. Luke leaves this morning for Wanganui district, and expects to be away for a couple of days. Very general regret -will bo felt at the news of the dentil of Mr. Norman Kirkcaldie. The deceased, who had been engaged in farming pursuits near I.evin for a good many years, lia.d been in ill-health for some time past, and as a result had suffered from fits of depression, in one of which lie sbos himself last Saturday. Mr. Kirkcaldie nas very well known and popular throughout the district in which he had made his home, and his publicBpiritodness was generally recognised and admired. According to a Press Association cablegram from London. Sir AYilliam Robinson, director of the Anglo-Con-tinental Produce Company, has been elected chairman of the Homo Produce Exchange. He intends to actively push colonial interests.
A resolution was carried by tho New Zealand Poultry Conference on Saturday congratulating tho Mayor (.Mr. J. P. Luke) on his recent election to Parliament.
