Claudo Achille Debussy, the famous French composer, at the age of 56 years. Dr. Williams, of Gisborue, who has been for over n, year on active' service, is returning to New Zealand. Dr. Williams has been in charge of a ward at the Walton-or.-Thames Hospital, with the rank of captain in the N.Z.A.M.O. An Imperial casualty list reports that Lieutenant W. J.-Sini; : son of Mr. Justice Sim, of Dimedin, was lroimded on March 15. Captain J. Thompson, M.A., has bt-en appointed lecturer in French at Victoria University College (war appoint.ment). Captain Thompson had a. brilliant career at Otago University, where lie held a Junior University Scholarship, the Senior University Scholarship in French, and took his M.A.. degree with first-class honours in Latin and French in 19U.-Ho then spent a year on the staff of the Waitaki High School, but gave up teaching to go to the front. After a year in Gallipoli aaid a year in Franco he lias now returned wounded, and has been discharged.
The death occurred on Tuesday at Palmerston North, at, .the age of 83 years, of Mr. James lloLbio. The late Mr. Robbie was born near Balmoral Castle, in Scotland, in the year 1834, and landed with his ivifa at Lyttelton in 1863, before (he tunnel and railway to the port was built, consequently they had to walk over the Port Hills into Christchurch. Mr. Robbie went in for farming, and shared the vicissitudes of the early pioneers, taking up land at Papanui. The family remained there till 1890, when they removed to the North Island, and purchased a property at Jjunnythorpe, where Mr. Robbie carried on forming for a number of years, retiring to i'almerstoii ten years ago. Another son of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Hawke, of ClareviUe, has given his life, for his country, Rifleman Ernest Alfred Hawke having died of wounds on March 15 in France. On the motion of Mr. G. Watson, Miss Lyra Veronica Esmcralda Tavlor was on Thursday admitted by the Chief Justice as a barrister and solicitor ofthe Supreme Court. Stanley Victor Raines was, on the motion' of Mr. A. Gray, K.C., admitted as solicitor, and, on the motion of Mr. M. F. Luckie, Michael Gilfedder, Judge of the Native Land Court, was admitted as a barrister.
